The motion

That the Parliament recognises the 80th anniversary of a key moment in the Shetland Bus operation; understands that, during the Second World War, when Norway was occupied by Germany, a group of small boats ferried people and weapons between Shetland and Norway under the cover of darkness; further understands that these boats, collectively known as the Shetland Bus, initially operated informally using fishing boats, before becoming a formal part of the war effort and completing more than 200 trips; remembers the 44 lives lost during these crossings; notes that, 80 years ago, in 1943, three American sub-chasers went into service on the Shetland Bus operation, bringing an end to fatalities; further notes that events marking this anniversary are taking place in Shetland, including wreath-laying ceremonies in Lerwick and Scalloway, and a visit from Royal Norwegian Navy ship, HNoMS Gnist; expresses its support for these memorial events, and commemorates the bravery of all those who undertook crossings as part of the Shetland Bus operation.
