Commemorating the Life of Boxing Legend Ken Buchanan

The motion

That the Parliament commemorates the life of boxing legend Ken Buchanan, the former world lightweight champion, who sadly died in April 2023; understands that Ken was largely regarded as Scotland's greatest ever boxer; remembers particularly the victories of 1970, when he won the WBA lightweight world title, and 1971, when he took the WBC title; commends Ken's great achievements of winning 61 of 69 fights and being the American Boxing Writers' Association's Fighter of the Year 1970, ahead of Muhammad Ali; considers that Ken, with his amazing success as a boxer, was a great advocate for sport in Scotland and his home of Edinburgh; understands that Ken had strong links to Leith and that there is a statue erected in Ken's honour on Leith Walk; notes that Edinburgh's love of Ken was clearly demonstrated by the fans and mourners who lined the streets for Ken's funeral cortege heading to St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh; considers that Ken's life and career had a profound impact on the communities in Edinburgh and Leith, and hopes that Ken and his work will be remembered as an inspiration for Scottish sport and boxers for generations to come.
