50th Anniversary of Seafield Colliery Disaster
The motion
That the Parliament acknowledges with sadness the 50th anniversary of Kirkcaldy’s Seafield colliery disaster; notes that, at around 6.45 pm on the evening of 10 May 1973, a large section of roof of the D22 seam under the Firth of Forth gave way, trapping nine men deep underground; pays tribute to the five men who lost their lives in the disaster, James Comrie, Angus Guthrie, Robert Henderson, James Holmes, and Thomas Kilpatrick; recognises that, as the colliery was an integral part of Kirkcaldy’s economy, being one of the biggest employers in the local area at the time, the disaster had a devastating impact on the morale of the local community; commends the 80th Linktown Scout Group, which has organised a memorial service for the anniversary, which will include the laying of wreaths and a two-minute silence at Seafield beach, and thanks all who will be taking part.
