International Day of the Midwife 2023

The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges that in maternity units and through virtual events across the globe, midwives, colleagues, parents and relatives will be celebrating International Day of the Midwife on 5 May 2023; notes that the theme for 2023 will be "Together again: from evidence to reality"; understands that this time of celebration, which is supported by the Royal College of Midwives, both honours and pays homage to the efforts of midwives and their associations, as well as to action what it sees as critical evidence; believes that this includes findings presented by the State of the World’s Midwifery (SoWMy) 2021 on the sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn and adolescent health (SRMNAH) workforce from 194 countries, paving the way, it believes, towards meaningful change for the profession and the women and families it cares for; understands that on 5 May every year, since 1992, the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) leads a day of global recognition and celebration of the work of midwives, which is observed by more than 50 nations and co-ordinated by the ICM, in partnership with its member organisations; considers that, in addition to all of this, over the past years during the COVID-19 pandemic, including lockdown, and thereafter, midwives, maternity support workers and student midwives have met extraordinary circumstances and risked their lives to provide excellent care to women and their families, and commends midwives right across the country for what it sees as the truly selfless way that they have been there for all communities throughout the pandemic and beyond.
