Glasgow Primary School Wins Big in a UK-wide Competition

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Our Lady of Peace Primary School, based in the east end of Glasgow, on recently winning £1,000 after coming first place in the OVO Foundation Nature Prize; understands that the competition, which was run in partnership with the Lets Go Zero campaign, saw schools come up with their own initiatives to help students and their communities connect with nature and increase access to the outdoors; notes that the group of P7 students from the Barlanark school took the top spot with their idea to create an inclusive gardening club; understands that, run by the school's oldest pupils, the garden will harvest food for the school’s most vulnerable families and give students from deprived backgrounds a chance to learn necessary skills for the world of work; further understands that older students will also lead sessions for younger students, allowing them to pick what is grown and teaching them valuable skills in food growing; recognises that the OVO Foundation wants to ensure that all children and young people, especially those in underserved communities, have access to nature and that students are equipped with the skills, knowledge and opportunities to protect it, and believes that the Nature Prize and the wider Let’s Go Zero campaign is a great way for schools to kickstart climate action in school grounds and in every classroom.
