Maggie's Aberdeen Celebrates 10th Anniversary

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Maggie’s in Aberdeen, which is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the centre opening in 2023; understands that the first Maggie’s centre opened in Edinburgh in 1996, when founder Maggie Keswick Jencks used her own experience of having cancer to create a new type of support for patients and their families; further understands that Maggie felt that her diagnosis and treatment were as hard on her family as they were on her, and so created a centre that could make the experience of cancer more manageable for everyone; notes that there is now a network of Maggie’s centres across the UK and abroad; understands that, in the past decade, the centre in Aberdeen has hosted more than 72,000 visits from people whose lives have been turned upside down by cancer, with one-to-one psychological support being offered on more than 5,000 occasions; notes that to celebrate its 10th anniversary, Maggie’s Aberdeen is hosting a ball in September 2023, following on from its successful Valentine’s Ball in February 2023, which raised an astonishing £142,000 for the charity; commends all staff at Maggie’s Aberdeen, and across the wider Maggie’s centre network, for the crucial, caring and compassionate work they carry out, and wishes them every success moving forward.
