Publication of 16 Incle Street

The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges the publication of the book 16 Incle Street, which was written by author and former journalist Jeff Holmes; notes that the new book recounts the circumstances of the murder in 1924 of Maggie McNaught, also known as Maggie Gallacher, at the home of her mother in 16 Incle Street, Paisley; understands that Maggie was 30 years old when she was killed by her husband John Gallacher, who was aged 29, and was later convicted of murder; notes that the book examines how society’s view of, and response to, domestic violence have been transformed over past decades; notes with concern that such abuse is still prevalent today; understands that an estimated one in five women are affected by domestic violence in Scotland; further understands that publication of the book has been welcomed by Stuart McMillan, whose grandmother, Isabella McNaught, was the sister of Maggie McNaught; commends Jeff Holmes for pledging to donate the profits from the sale of his book to the charity Renfrewshire Women’s Aid, which was established in 1985; further commends Renfrewshire Women’s Aid for providing support to women and children who are affected by domestic abuse across Renfrewshire, and notes that Renfrewshire Women’s Aid is part of the Scottish Women’s Aid network, which comprises about 40 local groups across Scotland.
