Launch of First Permanent Drone Delivery Service
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the launch of the UK’s first permanent drone delivery service in Orkney; congratulates Royal Mail and Skyports Drones Services for the roll out of the service; understands that drone delivery is expected to increase resilience and delivery times for post routes in Graemsay and Hoy; believes that the use of an electric drone can contribute to a reduction of emissions associated with delivery; understands that this launch comes after many years of tests and pilots in island communities around the country, including a prior test in Orkney in 2021; believes that, although the current focus is on mail deliveries, this technology has significant potential for other applications, including the delivery of medicines; pays tribute to the postal workers who help to keep island communities connected, and hopes that this technology brings benefits for them and for island residents.
