First Ship Built in 160 Years at Harland & Wolff’s Methil Dockyard Completed

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the news that the first ship built in 160 years at Harland & Wolff’s Methil dockyard has been completed; understands that the barge is the first to be built at the yard in Fife since 1856 and will join an existing fleet of tugs and barges that are used to transport recyclable and non-recyclable material across London; believes that this ensures a safe, clean and sustainable way of managing such materials; understands that the project has kept 115 people in active work at Harland & Wolff’s Methil facility and has enabled further employment, bringing the workforce up to around 150 people, with around 15 year one and year two apprentices having also been able to work on the project, providing them with essential shipbuilding experience during the early stages of their careers; thanks the Cory Group’s extensive £18.1 million investment in the construction of 23 barges at the facility, showcasing, it believes, their confidence in the strength and versatility of skill that exists in the Methil workforce, and wishes Harland & Wolff, and its employees, all the best for their contract, and for the future.
