West Kilbride’s Andy Donaldson, Breaks World Record for Oceans Seven Challenge

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Andy Donaldson, from West Kilbride, for becoming the first person to swim the world's seven most dangerous channels in less than a year, known as the Oceans Seven Challenge; celebrates that the 32-year-old also set the fastest ever cumulative time for the challenge of 63 hours and 2 minutes, completing the final 12.1 mile stage in Japan in July 2023, having started the journey in August 2022; understands that the Oceans Seven features the toughest and most iconic channel swims in the world, ranging in distance from 12 miles to 27 miles; further understands that the toughest leg of the challenge, Tsugaru Strait in Japan, left him requiring hospital treatments following strong winds and 6.2 mph currents; recognises that Andy has broken a number of records, including the British record for swimming the English Channel, the first Scottish male to swim from Ireland to Scotland, and the fastest swim across the Cook Strait; acknowledges that Andy had to deal with ocean swells, currents, temperature changes and sharks to break the world record, and wishes him the best in his future endeavours.
