International Literacy Day on 8 September 2023

The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges International Literacy Day on 8 September 2023, which raises awareness globally on the issues surrounding adult and child literacy; notes that 2023's theme is "promoting literacy for a world in transition: building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies"; understands that the day also celebrates the importance of reading and writing from an early age and aims to highlight the importance of school and local libraries for children and young people; considers that it is important that these services are available to communities despite the financial constraints, which, it believes, are currently being placed on councils and local libraries; acknowledges research showing the importance of school libraries, which nurture a love of reading and can enrich children’s literacy skills, academic achievements, and mental wellbeing; recognises what it sees as the importance of local libraries, not only in Glasgow, but across Scotland, for promoting community cohesion and providing residents with a sense of place and belonging, and believes that, on International Literacy Day, it is important to keep Scotland's local libraries open for generations to come.
