10th Anniversary of World Thrombosis Day on 13 October 2023
The motion
That the Parliament recognises that World Thrombosis Day, which is held annually on 13 October, will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2023; commends Gordon McPherson for his work on the World Thrombosis Day steering group and in his role as a World Thrombosis Ambassador; understands that World Thrombosis Day is an international movement devoted to shining a spotlight on the condition of thrombosis, and draws attention to the signs, symptoms and risk factors of thrombosis, a condition that contributes to the deaths of one in four people worldwide each year; notes that the 2023 campaign will focus on the theme "Move Against Thrombosis" and encourages the public, healthcare professionals and policymakers to join together to support the World Thrombosis Day campaign, to get moving and stay healthy to reduce the risk for blood clots; believes that this will be an important means of raising awareness of the life-threatening condition, which is caused by abnormal blood clots in the artery or vein; notes that the symptoms include swelling in one arm or leg, and, in the case of deep vein thrombosis, pain and skin discolouration; further notes that the symptoms of pulmonary embolism can also include shortness of breath, chest pain, rapid heart rate and an unexplained cough; urges everyone to be vigilant and to educate themselves about the symptoms and the factors that can lead to developing the condition by visiting worldthrombosisday.org, and hopes that, by doing so, lives can be saved.
