Beatson Institute Award and Funding Announcement

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the announcement that the Beatson Institute has been confirmed as a centre of national excellence and has been awarded funding for the next seven years of £123 million, constituting the largest ever single investment by Cancer Research UK in Scotland; understands that the award was made following a funding review site visit earlier in 2023, conducted by a panel of independent scientific experts; notes that the funding will enable long-term discovery research into how cancers develop, grow and spread, as well as how the immune system can be used to fight the disease; understands that the investment will support major studies into specific types of cancer that are common to Scotland, including liver, pancreatic, bowel and lung; further understands that, in recognition of the institute’s success and to enable wider global recognition, the facility will have the new title of the Cancer Research UK Scotland Institute; welcomes this long-term investment into Scottish science and research, which, it believes, will allow the institute to recruit and retain the best scientists from around the world and enhance Scotland’s reputation as a place of world-leading research, and congratulates all at the Beatson Institute for this outstanding achievement.
