Planning the Financial Future for Wild Strathfillan Project Receives Substantial National Lottery Heritage Funding

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the news that The National Lottery Heritage Fund has recently awarded a grant of £42,195, which, it understands, is 50% of total costs, to Planning the Financial Future for Wild Strathfillan, a project run by Loch Lomond and The Trossachs Countryside Trust; understands that this award will allow the Trust to review the potential longer-term financial options and mechanisms for the various land uses and planned Wild Strathfillan conservation projects, to deliver a research study to consider the possibility of a Wild Strathfillan CIC to oversee and develop circular economy opportunities and to review additionality options for wider investment and to create a framework to further identify, define and monitor their community benefits; believes that Wild Strathfillan has been described as an ambitious partnership project that aims to deliver visionary landscape-scale nature restoration for around 50,000 hectares of the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park; acknowledges that the Countryside Trust is working in partnership with land managers, local communities, NGOs, businesses and the National Park Authority to deliver what it sees as this exciting project, which will span a range of habitats from mountain-top to loch-side; considers that the Strathfillan landscape, situated in the north of the National Park, is unique and biologically diverse, featuring some of the richest montane flora in the UK, along with the National Park’s only remaining Caledonian pinewoods; notes that the project area encompasses many designated sites, such as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) and Special Areas of Conservation (SACs), as well as the Breadalbane Mountains Important Plant Area; considers that, despite their importance for biodiversity, many of these sites are now in an unfavourable condition and that their surrounding habitats have become degraded and fragmented, with the area, it understands, greatly impacted by overgrazing, as well as pressures associated with habitat fragmentation; expresses its delight at this welcome funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, which, it understands, aims to invest money raised by National Lottery players in every part of Scotland’s diverse heritage, from museums, parks and historic places to archaeology, natural environment and cultural traditions, and wishes everyone involved all the very best in their commendable endeavours.
