World Menopause Day

The motion

That the Parliament recognises World Menopause Day, which is held every year on 18 October and which aims to raise awareness of the menopause and perimenopause, the symptoms of menopause and support options available to women; understands that the menopause can cause complications such as osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and depression; notes that the theme for the 2023 World Menopause Day will be cardiovascular disease, which, it understands, is the leading cause of death in women, post menopause; understands that women are nine times more likely to die from cardiovascular disease than breast cancer; notes that, during the menopause, many women will experience symptoms such as anxiety, brain fog, hot flushes and mood swings, which can have a huge impact on a woman’s life, including on their relationships, family and work; understands that some women have lost their employment due to menopause symptoms; further understands that, due to certain health conditions caused by the menopause, there is a risk of mortality; recognises that there is support available for women experiencing the menopause; considers, however, that a lot more can still be done to support women who are going through the menopause, and supports the ongoing search for advancements in treatment.
