Professor John JR Macleod Statue

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the unveiling of a new statue, to honour Professor John JR Macleod, in Aberdeen on 12 October 2023; notes that the life-size bronze and granite statue is located within a newly expanded area of Duthie Park called Macleod’s Corner; understands that the date of its unveiling marks the 100th anniversary of Professor John JR Macleod winning the 1923 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for the discovery of insulin; notes that he attended Aberdeen Grammar School before studying medicine at Marischal College; further notes that he led the University of Toronto team that discovered insulin for the treatment of type 1 diabetes; celebrates the life and work of Professor John JR MacLeod; gives thanks to the JJR Macleod Memorial Statue Society, led by John Otto and Kimberlie Hamilton, who made the project possible, and hopes that the statue inspires future generations of Aberdonians.
