World Arthritis Day, Spotlight on Fife

The motion

That the Parliament commends World Arthritis Day, which fell on 12 October 2023, as an opportunity to spotlight the lived experience of people with arthritis and other musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions; understands that there are an estimated 1.7 million people in Scotland with MSK conditions, including an estimated 700,000 people who live with osteoarthritis; believes that, in Fife, 48,000 people have osteoarthritis, over 2,500 have rheumatoid arthritis, and many children and young people have juvenile idiopathic arthritis; understands that Scotland Versus Arthritis, the leading arthritis charity, works to create a community of support for people with arthritis across Scotland; further understands that this includes the Joint Potential programme, which focuses on adolescent patients transitioning to adult services, and which is currently based at the Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline; commends the commitment to a youth work approach alongside clinical care, and the difference that it believes that this makes to the lives of young people and their families, and congratulates Scotland Versus Arthritis and healthcare professionals from NHS Fife on the impact of this work.
