Celebrating Diwali 2023

The motion

That the Parliament wishes a Happy Diwali to all those celebrating in the UK and around the world; notes that Diwali will be celebrated on 12 November 2023; further notes that the festival is celebrated by several different religions, including Hindus, Sikhs and Jains; understands that Diwali, commonly known as the festival of lights, symbolises the triumph of light over darkness; further understands that Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas, which is when Guru HarGobind, the sixth Sikh Guru, was released from prison, along with 52 other princes in 1619, and considers that the communities celebrating Diwali have provided Scotland with a significant enrichment of both its culture and its economic prosperity.
