The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Ken Fletcher on becoming the inaugural winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Scottish Agriculture Awards held in Glasgow in October 2023, notes that the event was organised by The Scottish Farmer in conjunction with partners, the Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland and AgriScot, as a long overdue celebration of Scottish farming; acknowledges that Ken received this honour and a worthy standing ovation in recognition of his incredible 46-year service to The Scottish Farmer, which he started as a cub reporter in February 1977, before finally retiring as editor, of what it understands is the oldest weekly agricultural publication in the world, in July 2023; understands that he has covered all the major agricultural stories, including the nightmare of the BSE and the foot and mouth outbreaks, while actively promoting what it sees as the sheer professionalism of modern farming; further understands that he has championed the arrival of new technology and artificial intelligence that will allow the sector to have real-time analysis of the business at any given time, while acknowledging that old-fashioned hard work and down-to-earth savvy remain crucial; believes that Ken's expert journalistic knowledge extends further, to the automotive industry, sports and whisky, and wishes Ken and his wife, Fiona, a long and happy retirement.
