World Diabetes Day and the Diabetes Tech Can’t Wait Recommendations Launch

The motion

That the Parliament celebrates World Diabetes Day on 14 November 2023, and endorses the recommendations made by Diabetes Scotland from its year-long campaign, Diabetes Tech Can’t Wait, with reference to motion S6M-08272 in which the Parliament celebrated the campaign launch; recognises that these recommendations call on the Scottish Government to set targets to drive forward progress, aiming for 100% of children and 70% of adults living with type 1 diabetes to be using hybrid closed loop tech by 2030; understands that these recommendations call on NHS boards to remove unnecessary barriers to accessing tech, such as mandatory structured education for people who are already experienced in managing their diabetes; considers that there has been progress on diabetes tech this year with the announcement of a national onboarding program to get more people onto diabetes tech, and notes the Diabetes Scotland recommendation to develop the National Diabetes Tech Onboarding Pathway into a long-term programme, if successful; believes that, with 33,000 people living with type 1 diabetes in Scotland and just 17.7% of those who are using insulin pumps and 8.3% using continuous glucose monitors, further funding is needed to go further and faster in the roll-out of what it sees as this vital life changing technology, and reaffirms the commitment in motion S6M-08272 to the expansion of access to diabetes technology to ensure that every person with diabetes has access to the most appropriate form of technology to best manage their condition and improve their quality of life.
