State of Caring in Scotland

Lodged by Miles Briggs (Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party) Standard Motion 30 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament recognises that Carers Rights Day 2023 takes place on 23 November; understands that the Carers Rights Day theme is “Your rights: today, tomorrow and in the future” and is about raising awareness of carers' rights and entitlements to practical and financial support; further understands that the research, State of Caring 2023, by Carers Scotland, found that 44% of carers on Carer’s Allowance are cutting back on food and heat to make ends meet, and that it highlights the significant damage that caring without the right support has on carers’ physical and mental health; calls on the Scottish Government, NHS and local authorities to act on this research to protect and improve carers’ health and wellbeing; recognises the immense contribution that carers make to their own families, friends and communities, and believes that this should not be at the cost of carers' own financial security, health and wellbeing.
