The World Congress of Soil Science at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) Wins Best Business Event Award

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the World Congress of Soil Science at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) in Glasgow on winning the Best Business Event Award, sponsored by STV, at the 2023 Thistle Awards national final; notes that the Thistle Awards, held this year at the Glasgow Hilton on 1 December, recognise and champion the very best of the Scottish tourism, hospitality and events industry; understands that the World Congress of Soil Science, a leading international soil science conference that is held every four years in different countries, returned to the UK in 2022 for the first time since 1935; recognises that the 2022 congress in Glasgow, organised by the British Society of Soil Science, on behalf of the International Union of Soil Sciences, brought together soil enthusiasts from around the world, facilitating vital knowledge sharing between industry-leading academics and practitioners; understands that the event, which was based on the theme of "social science-crossing boundaries, changing society", offered a programme of specialist workshops and discussion sessions, supported by tours and a cultural and arts programme; celebrates that the judges of the Thistle Awards described the congress at the SEC as a "benchmark for all business events" and praised the clear demonstration of content, public outreach and environmental sustainability efforts, and commends the British Society of Soil Science, the team at the SEC, and the Glasgow Convention Bureau for working in collaboration to implement a highly successful event attended by over 1,600 people.
