Celebrating the Success of Stirling High School Pupils at St Andrew's Day Debating Competition

That the Parliament celebrates the success of Stirling High School pupils at the 2023 St Andrew's Day debating competition; understands that the annual St Andrew’s Day Debating Tournament, hosted by Young Speakers Scotland, is the premier event in Young Speakers Scotland’s debating calendar; notes that pupils from around Scotland compete in a day-long tournament to debate topical issues with one another; believes that the competition is unique as it allows pupils to participate as judges and chairs, in the presence of Scottish university students, who act as mentors throughout the day; understands that 20 teams took part in three preliminary rounds, with debaters giving speeches on a variety of topics, and that, following the preliminary rounds, the best three schools were Broxburn Academy, Edinburgh Academy and Stirling High School; notes that after an excellent final debate on the motion "This house regrets the commercialisation of feminism", Stirling High School was declared the winner, with Broxburn Academy the runners-up; congratulates the winners, Heather Cook, after being declared the best speaker, along with teammate, Logan Henderson, both from Stirling High School; is grateful to everyone who helped make this event possible, in particular, the University of Edinburgh debaters who volunteered their time to judge this event, and the school teachers, and extends its very best wishes for continued success to the winners for the future.
