Celebrating Academic Links Between Scotland and Taiwan

The motion

That the Parliament notes what it sees as the strong and continuing academic links between higher education institutions in Scotland and the Republic of China (ROC/Taiwan); understands that 762 students from the UK studied in Taiwan in 2022, with 564 learning Chinese as a language, including many from Scottish universities; recognises what it sees as the significant level of cooperation between academics in Scotland and Taiwan across many sectors and subjects; understands that the National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) established partnerships with 17 institutions in the UK, resulting in 1,817 Taiwan-UK co-authored publications in 2022; celebrates the growing number of agreements between Scottish and Taiwanese universities, and notes, in particular, what it sees as the importance of the Huayu BEST programme, a language exchange program, which currently engages six partner universities in the UK, including the University of St Andrews and the University of Edinburgh; believes that such programmes constitute important opportunities for cultural and academic exchange between Scottish and Taiwanese students; celebrates the exchange agreements between National Taiwan University and the University of Edinburgh’s college of management; notes what it sees as the strong partnership between NTNU and the University of Glasgow; further notes the desire of many universities in Scotland looking to nurture and further more cooperative and exchange opportunities between higher education institutions in Taiwan and Scotland in the years ahead; thanks Director General Chia-Cheng Chang of the Edinburgh Office of the Taipei Representative Office in the UK for his ongoing support for these academic links as his term in office comes to an end; wishes him well in the future, and further wishes his successor well in the same post.
