Recognising the Prolific Goalscoring Career of Stephen Dobbie

The motion

That the Parliament recognises the remarkable footballing career of Scottish former professional player, Stephen Dobbie, whose outstanding career saw him become one of Europe’s most prolific marksmen, especially at Queen of the South, where he became the second-highest goalscorer of all time, netting 166 goals, and also the "Doonhamers'" record scorer in a single season, with 43 goals scored in 2018-19; notes that he started his career at Rangers, followed by spells at Hibernian and St Johnstone, before scoring 55 goals in 105 appearances for the Dumfries club during his first spell at Palmerston Park and then featuring in the club’s first ever appearance in the Scottish Cup final in 2008, which subsequently earned the club a place in the UEFA Cup, only to be beaten by Danish Superliga club, FC Nordsjaelland, over two legs; acknowledges that his scoring prowess continued when he moved to Blackpool, helping the team to promotion to the Premier League via the 2010 play-offs, and later achieving the same feat with Swansea City during the 2011 play-offs, before returning to Blackpool where he played in a third successive play-off final; further acknowledges that his scoring exploits continued at Brighton, and then at Crystal Palace where he helped the Eagles to win promotion to the Premier League, before returning to Scotland for a second stint at the "Doonhamers" where he scored a further 111 goals in 178 appearances, earning him a testimonial match, which was staged on 7 January 2024 and saw a Queen of the South XI challenge a team of Scotland legends, and wishes Stephen every success in his new role as senior professional development coach.
