Speech Therapy Waiting Times for Children

Lodged by Meghan Gallacher (Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party) Standard Motion 30 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament notes what it sees as the worrying waiting times for children to have initial contact with a speech and language therapist; understands that the average waiting time has increased in the last five years by 7.6 months; notes reports that there are currently more than 6,500 children waiting for initial contact with a speech therapist in Scotland with these figures recently being revealed by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCLT); considers that, following freedom of information requests being carried out across all of Scotland’s NHS boards, local authorities and social care partnerships, there are very few signs of this situation improving, and understands that teachers are also reporting alarming numbers of children coming to school with minimal spoken language, and that it is the number one concern reported by health visitors.
