Cancer Prevention Action Week 2024

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the news that Cancer Prevention Action Week (CPAW), the annual campaign by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF), is taking place from 19 to 25 February 2024; understands that the 2024 theme is "physical activity and cancer prevention"; acknowledges that being active is great for overall health, and understands that research has found strong evidence that being active reduces the risk of breast, colon and womb cancers, and limited evidence for oesophageal, lung and liver cancers; considers, for example, that brisk walking and running reduce the risk of developing colon, breast and womb cancer; further considers that being inactive can also increase the chance of living with overweight or obesity, which are linked to 13 different types of cancer; understands that, in addition, the organisation says that there is growing evidence that people who are active before and after a cancer diagnosis have a better chance of survival; further understands that CPAW raises awareness of the health and cancer prevention benefits of being active, and that World Cancer Research Fund’s #MakeYourMove social media campaign seeks to encourage people to be more active in their daily lives; believes that being more active can be easier than people think and does not always mean running marathons or joining a gym, as everyone can be more active by finding moments throughout the day to do short bursts of activity, a concept that is known as "exercise snacking", which could be as simple as doing household chores, such as gardening; understands that repeated short bursts of movement can quickly add up to 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week, as recommended in the UK Chief Medical Officers’ Physical Activity Guidelines, and commends the World Cancer Research Fund for what it sees as this excellent initiative.
