People with Uncontrolled Asthma

The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges that uncontrolled asthma, known as severe asthma, is a type of asthma where symptoms are harder to control, even with, it understands, high doses of medicine; understands that this is the most serious and life-threatening type of asthma, which is considered a disability under the Equality Act 2010; considers that, while most people with asthma can manage their symptoms well with a preventer inhaler and a reliever inhaler, others may need extra support from their GP or asthma nurse and are sometimes given add-on treatments to better control their symptoms; understands that some people may be told that they have "difficult asthma", however, severe asthma is different; believes that with severe asthma, more specialist treatments are needed to control symptoms and reduce asthma attacks; understands that it can take a long time to find the combination of medicines and doses that works best for the individual patient; further understands that around 200,000 people in the UK have severe asthma, which is about four in 100 of those with all types of asthma; believes that, although Scotland is considered by many as a leader in access to advanced medicines for severe asthma, 80% of people in Scotland who could benefit are not currently receiving those treatments; encourages policymakers, clinicians and patients to work together towards a "Once for Scotland" care and treatment pathway for people with the condition, and implores the Scottish Government to ensure that pharmacists, allied health professionals and health care support workers, can be trained to support people with severe asthma in line with the ambitions of Scotland’s Respiratory Care Action Plan.
