Grand Old Lady of Renfield Street
The motion
That the Parliament notes that the Pavilion theatre, known as the "Grand Old Lady of Renfield Street", turns 120 years old on 29 February 2024; understands that the Pavilion opened its doors on 29 February 1904 and established itself as a leading music hall and variety theatre, where some of the leading artistes of the time loved to perform; further understands that Marie Lloyd, Little Tich, Harry Lauder, Will Fyffe, Sarah Bernhardt and Charlie Chaplin have all graced its stage; recognises that, from the 1930s onwards, a strong pantomime tradition was established, which continues to this day; understands that Harry Gordon, Dave Willis, Jack Anthony, Stanley Baxter, Jack Milroy and the Krankies have all appeared in panto at the Pavilion, along with some of Scotland’s biggest stars, including Billy Connolly and Lulu, while famous plays such as The Steamie and The Sash have been produced in-house, and considers that the Pavilion theatre holds a special place in the hearts of Glaswegians, who make the venue come to life.
