250th Anniversary of St Patrick's Church in Cowgate

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates St Patrick’s Church, in Cowgate, Edinburgh, on its 250th anniversary as a Christian church on 9 October 2024; notes what it sees as the rich history that the church has, having been built between 1771 and 1774 for the Scottish Episcopal Church (St Paul’s), then being sold to a Presbyterian congregation (the Scottish Relief Church) in 1818, and later being sold to the Roman Catholic Church in 1856; understands that the church was bought by Bishop Gillis in 1856 to serve the growing number of Irish immigrants who had moved to the Cowgate area, with the church paying half of the price and the congregation sacrificially giving the other half so that they could have a church building to call their own; further understands that the Venerable Margaret Sinclair, one of St Patrick’s former parishioners, is on her way to being declared a saint of the Catholic Church, and commends the church for its work in making its building a peaceful place for any soul visiting the busy city centre.
