The motion

That the Parliament welcomes No Smoking Day on 13 March 2024; understands that health charities, ASH Scotland and Asthma + Lung UK Scotland, are encouraging people across Scotland who smoke to "Quit and win" by reaching out for free support to give up tobacco and win with their health and fitness, family and finances; understands that smoking continues to be the biggest cause of preventable death in Scotland; notes that giving up smoking reportedly halves the risk of developing lung, mouth, throat, pancreas, bladder, oesophagus and larynx cancer after five to 10 years of being tobacco-free; believes that an average smoker who gives up tobacco on No Smoking Day would save more than £3,000 within 12 months, and urges the estimated two thirds of people who smoke, but want to quit, to use free expert stop smoking support provided by health professionals, such as by the Quit Your Way Scotland service that is run by NHS 24, which it understands can increase the chances of successful quit smoking attempts by three to four times.
