Scotland Can’t Wait: Parkinson’s Support

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the publication of a new report by Parkinson’s UK Scotland, Scotland Can’t Wait; recognises that there are nearly 13,000 people living with Parkinson’s in Scotland, with over 30 people newly diagnosed each week; understands that Parkinson’s is the fastest-growing neurological condition in the world, and that no available treatment can slow it down, stop it, or reverse its progress; further understands that Parkinson’s often causes significant mental health symptoms and dementia, and that there is a need to provide extra care and support for those affected by these aspects of Parkinson’s; notes with concern reported findings from the 2022 Parkinson’s Audit that fewer than half of all Parkinson’s medicines are administered on time in Scotland’s hospitals, despite the fact that these medicines are time critical and that early, late or missed doses can, it understands, cause serious harm; considers that a higher proportion of people with Parkinson’s live in remote areas in Scotland, and that accessing integrated Parkinson’s care in Scotland’s remote communities can be more difficult, including in parts of the North East Scotland region; understands that the report, Scotland Can’t Wait, identifies that people with Parkinson’s require multidiscipline expert care from a range of professionals throughout the course of this complicated condition, and commends Parkinson’s UK Scotland for its calls to work together to improve Parkinson’s care and support in Scotland.
