Commemorating the Life and Work of Theoretical Physicist, Professor Peter Higgs

The motion

That the Parliament commemorates, with the deepest respect and admiration, the life and contributions of Professor Peter Higgs, distinguished theoretical physicist, Nobel laureate, and Professor at the University of Edinburgh; understands that he played a pivotal role in the development of the Standard Model of Particle Physics, with his prediction of the existence of the Higgs boson, a particle that explains the mechanism of mass generation in the universe; recognises Professor Higgs’s profound impact on the understanding of the fundamental forces of nature, which, it believes, revolutionised the field of particle physics and inspired generations of physicists across the globe; acknowledges his commitment to education and academic excellence to advance scientific knowledge; notes his outstanding achievements and Nobel Prize in Physics in 2013, which recognised his ground-breaking theoretical work; celebrates his enduring legacy, and extends heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and all who were touched by his remarkable work and inspirational life.
