George Wyllie Art Gallery Opens in Greenock

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the opening of the The Wyllieum gallery in Greenock, which opened on 26 April 2024; understands that the gallery will celebrate the work and legacy of the pioneering artist, George Wyllie; understands that the gallery on Greenock's waterfront will house two temporary exhibitions of Wyllie's work, and will give local artists the opportunity to exhibit their responses to his art; understands that George Wyllie worked for over 20 years in Greenock, and further understands that the gallery is home to the largest collection of Wyllie’s work in the world; notes that the gallery will open in Greenock’s new Ocean Terminal development, which is expected to attract over 150,000 cruise ship passengers every year, and has confidence that many of them will be drawn there to view George Wyllie’s work; notes that much of George Wyllie’s art was inspired by the Clyde and its rich industrial past, and hopes that this collection of his work and its important local legacy will inspire new generations of artists in Inverclyde.
