Tillicoultry Primary School Awarded Reading Schools Gold Accreditation

The motion

That the Parliament expresses its delight that a Clackmannanshire primary school has been awarded for promoting a positive reading culture; acknowledges that Tillicoultry Primary School has received a Gold accreditation from Reading Schools, a Scottish Book Trust programme designed to champion the efforts of those who build and sustain a culture of reading; understands that, as part of this journey, the primary school welcomed various inspirational children's authors, with pupils and staff taking part in a range of related activities, which included a podcast and book swaps, as well as children being encouraged to bring a book to lunch and many more; notes that another activity was dubbed "The Masked Reader", which saw children and their families guessing which teacher was reading a bedtime story; further notes that pupil reading ambassadors also took their love of reading into wider Tillicoultry through reading cafés, where members of the community had the chance to bring a book along and join them; understands that the young people also worked in partnership with Ben Cleuch Burns Club, while reading areas in the school were also developed to include a reading café, a well-resourced library, book nooks and classroom libraries; further understands that, according to the Scottish Book Trust, research proves that reading for pleasure supports equity and wellbeing and raising attainment, as well as encouraging critical thinking, empathy and resilience; congratulates the Scottish Book Trust on this excellent initiative; further congratulates the school on this significant achievement, and commends the pupils, staff and everyone involved for enthusiastically embracing what it sees as this fantastic opportunity.
