The motion

That the Parliament congratulates a Dollar Academy pupil and his teammates, who have collectively won a global competition in debating for Scotland at the World Schools Debating Championships 2024; understands that the annual English language debating tournament for high school teams consisted of 68 teams, of which Scotland was initially ranked 11th for 2024; considers that, thereafter, the five Scottish pupils climbed up the rankings all the way to the top spot, claiming first place in the most prestigious schools debating tournament in the world, the final of which took place in Belgrade on 25 July 2024; acknowledges that the team consisted of Logan Moss from Dollar Academy, Miya Turner from Portobello High School, Sophie Hannigan and Callum Hendry from St Columba’s School in Kilmacolm, and Lena Zielinksa from Broxburn Academy; acknowledges the sentiment quoted by Logan in the press that "there is still a place - among the young - for reasoned, critical discussion"; understands that, on their way to the final in the knock out rounds, Scotland beat New Zealand, Pakistan, England and Qatar, having qualified in fourth place in the preliminary eight rounds; commends Logan and the entire team for maintaining their cool throughout the extremely high-stakes competition, never letting their nerves get the better of them; believes that debating is an invaluable educational tool, and hopes that this result has the power to encourage more Scottish young people to become involved.
