Centenary of Eric Liddell's Olympic Win

The motion

That the Parliament marks the centenary of Eric Liddell, nicknamed "The Flying Scotsman", with the opening of an exhibition at the Scottish Parliament commemorating his iconic Olympic gold medal victory in Paris in 1924; notes that he won with a time of 47.6 seconds, which was the world record at the time; understands that the exhibition offers a unique opportunity for visitors to explore the life and legacy of Eric Liddell, "the Flying Scotsman", 1924 Olympic champion, alongside other legends from the Scottish Sporting Hall of Fame and Scottish athletes competing in the 2024 Olympics; further understands that Eric Liddell's remarkable story reached global audiences through the 1981 Oscar-winning film, Chariots of Fire; notes that despite being born in Tianjin in China, Eric Liddell spent a year of his formative years in Drymen in Stirling, and understands that the win was marked at a sermon in Drymen Parish Church by Rev TJ Monteith, who emphasised Eric Liddell's strong faith and "high Christian principles" in withholding from the 100-metres race, which he was due to run at the Paris 1924 Olympics but did not do so due to the race falling on a Sunday.
