Glorious Twelfth Boosts Biodiversity and Rural Economy in the Highlands and Islands

The motion

That the Parliament celebrates the Glorious Twelfth, which is marked annually on 12 August, for what it sees as the significant contribution that grouse moor management makes to Highlands and Islands’ rural economy and biodiversity; understands that the total economic value of shooting to Scotland is £760 million a year, as indicated in the Value of Shooting report that was launched by the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) at the Scottish Game Fair; acknowledges that gamekeepers and land managers work year-round to promote sustainable grouse moor management; believes that their management techniques strengthen biodiversity, providing important refuges for red-listed species such as the curlew, lapwing, oystercatcher, ring ouzel and redshank; understands that their work in managing invasive species, pests and predators, especially during critical periods such as nesting, helps protect these key species; further understands that the benefits of grouse moor management are evident when comparing moorlands managed for grouse shooting with those that are not; notes that unmanaged moorlands often have high predation rates and higher wildfire risk, leading to a decrease in vulnerable species and overall biodiversity, and commends BASC members, such as gamekeepers and land managers, for what it sees as protecting and enhancing moorlands and the rural economy in the Highlands and Islands region.
