Parish Priest of St Joseph's Church, Helensburgh, Retires after 40 Years of Service

The motion

That the Parliament recognises the service of Monsignor John Hughes, who will be retiring after 40 years of service; notes that he held his last Mass at St Joseph’s Church, Helensburgh, on 6 September 2024; understands that Monsignor John celebrated his 75th Birthday and 40 years as a priest at a special International Parish Barbecue that he had set up to celebrate the range of nationalities living locally; acknowledges his experience as chaplain to Our Lady and St Patrick's High School in Dumbarton, rector of the Pontifical Scots College, Rome, for five years, and, prior to that, as vice-rector of the Scotus College seminary in Bearsden, and wishes him a peaceful and well-earned retirement.
