Celebrating Scotland's Paris 2024 Success

The motion

That the Parliament recognises the success of athletes from Scotland at the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games; commends the accomplishments of every participant from Scotland at the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games; understands that athletes from Scotland have continued to make their mark on the Team GB and Paralympic GB’s medal count, adding 13 and 20 medals respectively; notes that swimmer Duncan Scott secured Team GB’s first swimming Gold in the Men’s 4x200m Freestyle, and Silver in the 200m Medley, becoming Scotland’s most-decorated Olympian; further notes that athlete Josh Kerr took home a Silver medal in the Men’s 1,500m, becoming the first athlete from Scotland to win track medals at successive games; understands that track athlete Nicole Yeargin took home two Bronze medals in the Mixed 4x400m and Women’s 4x400m team; further understands that Scottish track cyclist Neah Evans secured second place in the Women’s Madison race, and that Jack Carlin won Silver in the Men’s Team Sprint and Bronze in the Solo Individual Sprint; congratulates rowers Rowan Mckeller and Sholto Carnegie on their medals, and Beth Potter on her triathlon medals; recognises para-swimmer Stephen Clegg, who won two Gold medals in the S12 100m Backstroke and S12 100m Butterfly, and understands that he set a new world record in the Butterfly event; further recognises that swimmer Faye Rogers won Gold in the S10 100m Butterfly, and notes Louis Lawlor’s Scottish record in the S14 100m Backstroke; acknowledges that Sammi Kinghorn became one of three athletes at Paris 2024 to win five medals, including Gold in the T53 100m in a new Paralympic record, and Silver in the T53 400m, 800m and 1500m, as well as in the 4x100m Universal Relay; congratulates Ben Sandilands on his world record and Gold medal in the T20 1500m; acknowledges cyclist Jenny Holl’s world record in the Women’s B 300m Individual Pursuit, and Bronze in the 100m Time Trial, and notes her achievements in Road Cycling events, including Gold in the Road Race and Silver in the Time Trial; congratulates Nathan McQueen, Stephen McGuire and Gordon Reid on all taking Gold; considers that sport can be a force for good in inspiring younger generations into sport, including in the South Scotland region, and enabling the teaching of life skills through sport, including inspiring healthy choices; commends all the athletes from Scotland who participated in the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and wishes them every success in the future.
