World Alzheimer's Month and World Alzheimer's Day
The motion
That the Parliament acknowledges that World Alzheimer's Month takes place every September and that World Alzheimer's Day is 21 September each year around the world; understands that these events comprise international campaigns involving myriad organisations, all aimed at raising awareness of and challenging the common stigma that surrounds Alzheimer-related dementia; further understands that, whilst the first Alzheimer’s month campaign was launched in 2012, previous studies have shown that an average of two out of three people globally have little or no understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and associated dementia in their countries; considers that, since its inception, the impact of World Alzheimer’s Month is increasing, but that the stigmatisation and lack of information surrounding dementia remains a global problem that, it believes, calls for global action; understands that individuals often consider this disease to be a normal part of ageing; believes that, while this may not be entirely true, a substantial risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease is increasing age, the probabilities of which are increasing with the steadily increasing ageing population, and commends the work of Alzheimer organisations, including Alzheimer Scotland, in its research and care work for the benefit of those living with the condition, as well as their relatives, friends and carers.
