The motion

That the Parliament notes with sympathy the 65th anniversary of the Auchengeich mining disaster, which took place on 18 September 1959; understands that the tragedy was Scotland’s worst mining disaster of the 20th century; recognises that the tragedy left 67 children without a father and 41 women without a husband when 47 men aged from 20 to 62 lost their lives; acknowledges what it sees as the impact of the disaster that is still felt in the community of Moodiesburn and the surrounding areas; notes with gratitude that the Auchengeich Memorial Committee continues to keep the miners in living memory by arranging a service every year at the memorial statue at the Auchengeich Miners Club in Moodiesburn, and commends the entire Moodiesburn community for their dignity, respect and togetherness in their hardworking efforts to ensure that the memories of those lost to the disaster are kept alive, while paying respect to them and their families.
