World Alzheimer’s Month Highlights Proactive Work by Dementia-friendly Doune and Deanston

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the news that with September being World Alzheimer’s Month, a group based in rural Stirlingshire has been educating people of all ages regarding the need to become what is known as dementia-friendly; understands that the Dementia-friendly Doune and Deanston group has linked up with Kilmadock Development Trust to create a community where people understand dementia and allow those with the condition to live in the way that they wish; believes that dementia-friendly communities are a response to research, which has revealed that many people with the condition feel the need to withdraw as it progresses due to lack of understanding from society around them; understands that, according to the research, alongside a third of people with dementia who reported feeling lonely, around a quarter of carers also reported feeling cut off; recognises that staff at both Doune Health Centre and Woodside Pharmacy have also undertaken dementia awareness training as well as completing an environmental audit of their premises, and understands that awards have been presented to a number of these individuals by the Provost of Stirling, who praised their contribution to supporting those living with dementia in the villages.
