World COPD Day on 20 November 2024

The motion

That the Parliament recognises World Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Day on 20 November 2024; understands that the 2024 theme for World COPD Day is “Know Your Lung Function"; notes that COPD is a group of conditions, including bronchitis and emphysema, that cause breathing difficulties; further notes that COPD is a progressive and long-term lung condition without a cure; believes that up to two thirds of people in Scotland with COPD remain undiagnosed; understands that 90% of hospital stays for diseases of the respiratory system are emergency stays; recognises what it sees as the importance of accurate diagnosis of COPD to reduce emergency admissions into hospital; considers that spirometry is an integral tool for diagnosing COPD; believes that spirometry is an important tool for patients to better understand their current lung function; encourages patients to attend their annual review to better understand their current lung function; further encourages discussion about receiving appropriate treatment that reduces the environmental impact of respiratory care; recognises the efforts of health care professionals working to improve outcomes for patients living with COPD, ensuring that patients are properly educated on how to use their inhaler and to get the best possible outcome for their treatment, balanced with limiting the impact on the environment; welcomes the work of Asthma and Lung UK Scotland, Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland and carers in supporting people living with lung disease, and recognises the efforts of pharmaceutical companies, such as Chiesi Ltd and others, which are working to meet the needs of patients with COPD while reducing the environmental impact of respiratory care.
