New Dyslexia Report Published on Dyslexia Awareness Week

The motion

That the Parliament recognises that 30 September to 6 October 2024 marked Dyslexia Awareness Week Scotland; understands that it is estimated that one in 10 people in the UK are dyslexic; further understands that dyslexia is a learning difficulty, ranging from mild to severe, which primarily affects reading and writing skills but also the ability to process and remember information; praises the work of Dyslexia Scotland, the country’s national charity, which aims to create a dyslexia-friendly Scotland that values the skills and talents of dyslexic people; recognises that, as well as raising awareness, the charity offers a range of services such as a free helpline, events across the country, resources for teachers and delivery of training; commends, in particular, the charity’s recently published report, in partnership with the University of Glasgow, entitled Towards a dyslexia-friendly Scotland, which included the findings of an in-depth survey of over 1,400 participants on the experiences of people with dyslexia in Scotland and the barriers that they face, and welcomes the findings and recommendations of the report, particularly the measures identified to ensure early identification and improve long-term outcomes for children and young people.
