30 Years Since Cancer Research UK Scientists Led the Discovery of the BRCA Genes

The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges that October 2024 marks 30 years since Cancer Research UK (CRUK) scientists were at the forefront of the discovery of the BRCA genes, which revolutionised how certain cancers can be prevented, diagnosed and treated; understands that CRUK supported Professor Tomas Lindahl’s Nobel Prize-winning research on DNA damage and repair, which underpinned people's understanding of the BRCA genes; further understands that everyone has BRCA genes, but that around one in 400 people inherit a rare fault in these genes, giving them an increased risk of developing certain cancers, including breast, ovarian, prostate and pancreatic cancers; understands that cancer researchers are discovering more about how BRCA genes work, saving and improving the lives of people with faulty BRCA genes now and in the future; believes that studying the BRCA genes has deepened people's understanding of cancer biology, leading to the development of targeted therapies for several cancers; welcomes that CRUK scientists have developed a new family of drugs called PARP inhibitors, which are often used to treat people with faulty BRCA-driven cancers, and that every year, thousands of people receive these drugs as part of their treatment, and further welcomes news that CRUK scientists are now exploring how PARP inhibitors could be used to treat many more types of cancer, including the PARADIGM2 trial led by the University of Glasgow, jointly funded by the Brain Tumour Charity and CRUK, which is investigating if drugs can improve how brain tumours are treated.
