Open University in Scotland 50th Anniversary of Degree Awarding Ceremonies
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates the Open University (OU) in Scotland on celebrating its 50th anniversary of holding degree awarding ceremonies on 25 October 2024 at the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow; believes that the first degree ceremony was held at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh on 27 April 1974; further believes that the OU in Scotland has over 200,000 alumni; recognises the hard work and sacrifices of all 660 students participating in the ceremonies; further recognises the sacrifices and support of their families during their studies; notes that 25% of the participating students shared that they have a disability; further notes that 50% of participating students are the first in their family to study at higher education level; understands that 60% of the participating students were in receipt of the Part Time Fee Grant; further understands that the youngest graduate is aged 20, and the oldest is aged 84; commends the OU for its geographical reach, with students graduating from as far north as Shetland and as far south as Stranraer, and wishes all celebrating students every success for the future.
