Glasgow Pupils Help to Plant Pollok's First Community Orchard

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Glasgow school pupils on helping to plant Pollok's first community orchard; acknowledges that the children from St Marnock’s Primary School took part in a five-week programme led by drama artist, Roisin McLinden, which encouraged children to connect with nature; notes that, on a green space across from the community centre, the St Marnock’s Primary School team officially cut the ribbon to declare the orchard open and performed a play to entertain families who attended for the planting day; recognises that, with the help of Glasgow’s "Appletreeman", Andrew Lear, who runs a business growing Scottish heritage fruit trees, the children also took part in digging and planting activities; considers that through its engagement in the arts, environmental education and horticulture, the Pollok Grows Together project has engaged and inspired community members of all ages about Scotland’s rich orchard heritage and helped them to discover ways to enjoy home-grown fruit, while improving the local environment, and understands that the Pollok Grows Together project, which is run by Eco Drama, is a two-year initiative to create a vibrant, shared green space for Pollok residents and is part of the company’s wider Forgotten Orchard Project, which it understands has already planted 171 heritage apple trees and created 43 school and community orchards throughout Greater Glasgow.
