Glasgow Women's Club Still Going Strong After 90 Years
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates the Glasgow Keep Fit Movement, which is now called the Glasgow Keep Fit Club, on celebrating its 90th anniversary; notes that the group, which once ran 130 dance fitness classes across the city, performed with celebrities on television, and entertained vast crowds at Hampden during international football matches; understands that the club began in 1934, and included rhythmic and health-giving exercises to music, skipping, netball and Scottish country dancing, with each class being accompanied by a live pianist in the early days; acknowledges that the aim behind the Keep Fit Movement was to provide a programme of fun fitness classes, but that it ended up providing so much more for the women who attended, many of whom made lifelong friendships, and understands that there are now around 100 women still attending classes in city locations, including Jordanhill and Pollokshaws.
