Dornoch Environmental Enhancement Project Celebrates 10th Anniversary with Key 100,000th Oyster Milestone

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the Dornoch Environmental Enhancement Project (DEEP) on reaching a key milestone of the 100,000th oyster planted in the Dornoch Firth; notes that DEEP was established by the Glenmorangie distillery, the Marine Conservation Society and Heriot-Watt University in 2014, with the intention of restoring an extinct oyster reef in the Dornoch Firth beside the Glenmorangie distillery; understands that the previous oyster reef became extinct due to overfishing throughout the 1800s, and that restoring this reef could potentially double biodiversity on the seabed of the Dornoch Firth within 10 years; notes that DEEP ultimately aims to build a self-sustaining reef of four million oysters; acknowledges that DEEP has set what it sees as a world leading standard in environmental restoration projects, and has demonstrated what it sees as the strength of true collaborative partnerships between businesses, academia, trade bodies, governments and charities; applauds this partnership for what it has achieved in the last 10 years, and hopes to see DEEP continue to thrive as the project continues its work into the future.
